Part 2

Shit Happens

We came around a bend into a pile of stopped traffic. The road was strewn with gravel. We braked hard, those further behind braked harder. We all got a little sideways. I heard Carmen lock up his brakes behind me and saw him him gather it up. I didn’t see Michel, but there isn’t much I can see out my rear view. Suddenly, Gaetan, who was in front of me, pulled off onto the shoulder and he and his buddy jumped out. We all pulled over and got out.

We followed them back, running, but couldn’t see what they were going after. As we approached them we saw Michel standing on the side of the road. But didn’t see his car.

Holy %#@&!!

There was Michel’s car, upside down in a ditch! Apparently he also got sideways, but got further into the gravel than we did and then, ever so slowly, slid into the deep angle of the ditch beside the road and rolled over. Gaetan and his friend shut off the battery and so the smell of fuel and oil was just that. It looked a lot worse than it was.

We quizzed Michel on stock prices to make sure he was okay. He was fine - physically. But was heartbroken – who wouldn’t be, after that? Anyhow, as we inspected the damage it looked like his car had slowly rolled onto some soft weeds and tall grass. The windshield was not cracked anywhere. The pillars were intact. The doors opened and closed. Our biggest worry was the damage that could be done when the tow truck arrived.

Fire trucks, police cars, ambulances – yes, it was quite a scene. They checked out Michel completely to make sure he was okay. His blood pressure was only a little higher than normal. Lucky indeed!

And we were lucky to have such an experienced crew. Gaetan went to visit the farmer whose land was next to the ditch and convinced him to let us send a flat bed into his field. That way would could just turn Michel’s car back over onto its wheels into soft grass, with no dragging and no damage. We convinced the flat bed driver to follow our instructions. All went very smoothly.

As the car tilted back onto its feet, we could see there was no real damage. Amazingly, the mirrors were intact. The antenna wasn’t even bent. There will be lots of body and paint work to do, but no mechanical or structural work required. The car was righted, then rolled easily on the grass and onto the flatbed. The front hood opened and closed like always.

Michel made arrangements to have it brought to Normand, one of our local Pantera owners who has a body shop. We marveled at the strength of these cars. And our amazingly good luck!

It surely was not what we had expected starting out the day, but who could have asked for more under the circumstances - the car and Michel basically unscathed.

And so, a stockbroker gets to forget about the market for a while, and can now concentrate on what color he wants his cat to be by the time we go for a first run next spring.

Shit happens.

Holy S**t David where did this happen? Very unfortunate for the Cat, I know this sounds corny but it's just metal and Michel will be doing bodywork sooner rather than later. Normand is a magician with the bodywork and paint.

I think all of us will have had a sick feeling in our stomach reading Michel's story, David, because it could have been any one of us. It has nearly been me a few times. I'm going to remind myself of the story and your photos each time I take the cat out, and resolve yet again to slow down if conditions are the least bit sketchy.

Kudos to you, Gaetan and the others for taking care of Michel and making sure the tow truck did not make the damage worse.
Michel,

I just happened to call David about 5 minutes afterwards but he couldn't talk more than to tell me what had just happened. I was feeling sick for the next half hour until I could speak more with him to get more details. When I finally saw the photos, I couldn't believe how little damage there was to the car. In a very unlucky situation, you had incredible luck.

This was not a very happy ending to what was an otherwise spectacular day, but I can think of no better group of guys to have around under such circumstances. Quick-thinking, resourceful and comforting in a time of need. Pretty much sums up most of the Pantera guys I know.

I am very glad that you are OK and that the car was not severely damaged. Now that the pit in your stomach has no doubt cleared, you can move on to the next stage: what colour?

Mark
YIKES!!
Michel, very glad to hear YOU didn't sustain any body damage!! It's been said a hundred times, the car is just a car. It is, however, a comfort to know, in this day of crumple zones and multiple air bags, that a pantera is built tough enough to protect the occupants, and in this case, tough enough to save it's own life as well.

First, a super thanks to the team, David, Carmen, Gilles, Gaetan and Gaetano for the quick on site thinking and coordinating of, hope to be, “THE NEVER AGAIN EVENT” and the post trauma support by making me laugh it out.

BTW, my over sized chromed half shafts still better be on the car!

I am safe, sound and ready to order parts to fix my Pantera. Color? I am not decided yet but black is on my mind the most, maybe a chromed midnight blue.
Second, here's the story: Picture yourself on an autumn postcard road with a nice straight line going down a valley, your looking ahead, sighing from the oranges, yellows and greens with the bleu cloudless sky, you see a yellow color caused by the color changing leaves not the normal 11 am color.
There is a long distance in front of me, before the next Pantera. Next, we are driving in the bottom of the valley, so I don't see the cars further then Carmen's rear witch is getting closer, who, by now is locking the brakes, you can see the smoke coming up, so I rammed my brake pedal, the car pulled immediately to the right and was already on the side road gravel, at that point the rear caught up to the front (180°) I was not going fast, so I was not scared for my life. But I was pissed, ever so pissed at my lack of control. Then MY Pantera slides sideways into the ditch and slowly toppled over.

Looking ahead of me I saw straw and water, and throw my mirror, oil dripping down from the rear hood, I unhooked my seat belt; man! the Pantera is spacious, upside down you can lie flat on the padded roof! Still pissed, I tried to open the door, my left hand slipped, I smelled the air (because we had just fueled our cars), no gas fumes, ‘good’, tried the door a second time, it open with ease, I came out of my upside down Pantera, just like that, upside down, climbed up the ditch, looked to my right and saw Gilles, Gaetan's friend running towards me. I turned left, threw my sun glassed in the gravel, witch had stayed in place on my face, sat down on the rocks, stood back right up and walked toward Gilles. By then, the rest of the team, caught up a few seconds later, 911 was already called. A few minutes later a fire rescue van was passing by and stopped to help, asking me the first consciousness questions...and then, while I was checked by the medics, David, Carmen, Gaetano, Gilles and Gaetan where making sure the towing driver was doing exactly what they asked.
And finally, two years ago, last July; I joined this forum, after seeing a pic of a Pantera on the internet, and said, hey why haven’t I bought my own yet, so I contacted George Pence who directed me to David and the rest of the group in the neighborhood and I was hooked to this friendship way before I found my Pantera.

You guys are the most supportive group I have ever known and I feel privileged to be part or it.

On some other posts, not P.I., readers might say, “serve's me right”, thinking he didn't handle the situation properly; he should have pulled the hand brake or what ever. But not one person on the P.I. forum said anything negative.

Thank you, Mark, George, Dennis, Michael, Robert, Peter, William, Blaine, Derrick, Brad, Doug, Rapid, DeTom and Harry for the encouragements.

Thanks David for your friendship and support. Thanks Carmen for being a good friend.

I took a hit to my ego and man what a hit, but am alive.

I wasn’t scared for my life,as I know I will not die whilst my friends are with me.

Michel,

This is the first opportunity I have had to see the PI post.

Mark, Andrew and Denis Charon came by yesterday and mentioned you had an incident. As Mark was explaining the incident I felt a cold chill run through my body.

I am so very relieved that you came away from the incident completely unscathed.

Finally, the damage to the car looks and sounds relatively minor. Hey, what do they say ? ... Cats have nine lives !!!
