I have a small oil leak that seems to be coming from the vicinity of the fuel pump. The one hole, one slot design of the fuel pump looks suspect to me. I was thinking of making a 1/16" thick sheet metal copy of the gasket and installing it between the pump and gasket, this would hopefully provide a better seal. Any comments.

This may sound weird but it works. I had the same trouble. Just a small leak but it made a mess after a long drive. Clean the area around the fuel pump real good. Warm the car up just enough so its not cold to the touch. Then...ok get this, use nail polish. You don't need to be neat, just slop it around the area. Then warm the car up some more. The polish will expand into the bad gasket area and dry fast. It really works. If you pick the right color no one will ever know.
Resealing the fuel pump gasket may fix the problem, but I suggest checking a little further. If your oil level is too high, it will flood this usually trouble-free area. Second, excess blow-by from worn rings, or a missing or plugged PCV valve, will pressurize the crankcase, producing oil leaks from the most unlikely places. Finally, is the difficult-to-access nut and bolt tight? If not, the real solution is obvious. There's also a small breather hole on the top of some replacement fuel pumps, that can be affected by #1 & 2.
