There is an interesting thread on the “DeTomaso mailing list” concerning old fuel lines and their huge potential fire hazard.

For many of you this is a “D'oh!” topic. But there are many people who with the help of this great forum are attempting work on their cars for the first time.
I am embarrassed to admit that in the fifteen years that I have owned #4134 it was not until year ten that I changed out my original fuel lines. I was too busy doing other projects. The metal line running directly to the stock carb from the fuel pump looked good so no worries.
But we should all know that the one that we can not easily see is the one to really worry about. The OEM fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump appears to be braided steel is nothing more than rubber with a steel braided cover. Also at risk for L cars is the rubber fuel hose from the filler neck to the tank. It is my understanding that modern fuel additives are extremely tough on rubber fuel lines (worse in California).
I was fortunate not to have developed a fuel leak from the hard and long since safe fuel lines. It is not a matter of if they will leak but when they will leak.
