We did it today. Changed the oil and my son left the old o ring stuck to the block. I went for a ride. 5 miles later ...right in front of my shop, it blew. FLAMES in the mirror. 30 seconds later I pull in and shut down. Lost 6 quarts. Burnt the paint under the bumper. Kissed concrete. I stayed cool and did not point the finger. Very lucky it happened where it did. Sweee!

Thankful nothing more happened to you or your car Bill.

Did I ever tell you about the time I changed the driver side header gasket to fix a leak? I had to remove the oil filter to make it easier to get to all the bolts. I was putting things back together when the wife kept coming out to tell me "it's almost time to go." We were meeting friends for dinner, and I needed to shower and change. So, I was rushing to finish up so we could take the Pantera. I got everything buttoned up and promptly fired up the car to verify the annoying tick of the exhaust leak was gone. Now, there was a much louder tick... I looked into the engine compartment just in time to see the last of my oil spattering onto the headers from where the filter is supposed to be, and 6 quarts of oil running down the driveway. Damn!

The moral of my story: Never rush a job! It will always take you longer in the end if you try to rush it.

No kidding, wish my old man had half that much class. Kids do.......well lets say, absent minded stuff. Your keeping your cool in the midst of the kaos could be the best lesson your son might have picked up on.
I've got an "almost" for you.

My Holley fuel pump failed so I got a Carter style (made in Mexico) replacement from Checker. Was headed to the mountains for some fun when I looked in the rear view mirror and realized that it looked like a Kiss concert behind me.

Could see oil on the driver side headers, but couldn't see the source. Turned out that the fuel pump was allowing block oil to spray out of the fuel overflow all over the headers. No fire but a lot of smoke!

I went to NAPA for the next one.

"My son left the o ring stuck to the block"

"The dog made that fart"

Oh how its easier to transfer the blame roll on floor LOL

Just kidding, glad to hear that the damage was minimal!
Wow Bill, that's no fun. Hope you know a good painter. Cool

Good things came of this
1. Your son will be supremely careful when messing with potentially disastrous outcomes. Lesson learned.
2. You were still able to make this post. Sometimes cars on fire don't allow that luxury.

All in all, coulda be way, way worse.

Keep us posted. Would love to see a photo of then engine compartment if you can stand it.

Damn, Adams, you are goulish ! You are one of those that stops traffic to look over the wall at the scene of a bad accident.

Bill,
Just glad you are OK . You definitely handled the situation better than most of us.
Jeff
I made the trip to Pidgeon Forge. Only Pantera there. Had a blast. After the fire, the rear of the car looked like a shot down aircraft. I quickly got out the hot water and Dawn. No noticable damage in the engine bay. I got home and the shop was spotless! My son cleaned up every thing. I always figure that no matter what happens in my life... It is my responsibility. We went over the part about matching the ends of the oil filters. Even the header paint stayed on fine. I told the story at the rod run... It has happened to a lot of others too. Yeah... real lucky!
