For those of you that have had your cars painted, what are the ranges of cost for strip and paint (no ther major body work), and what advice do you have to offer? I realize there will be quite a $ range, and you get what you pay for. Does the disassembly and re-assembly typically required for painting require a Pantera specialist or would any reputable shop serve as well? Any input/advice from you out there that have been this route would be appreciated.

Mine would have been over 12K if I didn't have it done by a friend of mine. He gave me a break of $5/hour off his usual shop price and I traded him some Mustang parts for a restoration he was doing for someone else. As it was, I still had about 9k out of pocket. Don't necessarily count on there not being any body work needed, it wasn't until my car was stripped that we realized the need for inner & outer rockers a radiator core support, some work to the driver's 1/4 panel, etc., etc. The body work that I was not planning on added about 3k to the job plus parts. If I took the car in now that the body is perfect, I would expect to pay in the neighboerhood of about $6,500.00. You can see the results and some of the process described in POCA Profiles 2002 No. 4 as the Pantera of the Quarter.

I did all of the disassembly, motor, trainy, interior, door glass etc. I had a glass shop pull the windshield and back window. It took about a month to disassemble and went off to the paint shop as a rolling chassis. I did the reassembly when it came back from the paint shop and it took about a year and a half. After it came back from the paint shop, I took all of the suspension off and had it bead blasted and powdercoated and put it back on.

If I had had a shop do all of the disassembly and reassembly, I expect the cost would have been in the neighborhood of 40k or more (including the paint work)

I am in Canada and my car is being painted now I dissasembled redisriped and seam welded my car before taking to the body shop. Had rust in door posts rockers and front valance as well as lower wheel house outter instal front air dam and glue in whindsheld and por 15ed all inside done by them.It looks like the cost will be around $20000.00 for the body shop alone. expencive but should be bullit proof will see paint in coming 2 weeks beter be good !
I decided that I couldn't afford a good commercial paint job which at that time cost around $4000, so I decided to do it myself. I stripped all the emblems, bumpers and glass from the car and began block-sanding & body-working the machine. I won't bore you with details, but I kept track of expenses and when the job was done (we shot it outside in a buddys driveway at 6AM before the morning breeze started), premium urethane paint, thinner etc cost me nearly $1000. The effort took 14 months of evenings and weekend work during which I lost the use of my car. Then of course, it needed to be color-sanded. This was in 1989, so I much doubt if prices have dropped...So yes, you can do this and save some buckage. No, its not worth it and I will not ever be repeating this exercise!
