Can't help you but I would ask the seller which issue of PI featured his car. I've got the last 12 years or so, or if you are interested in the car you could purchase the backissue from PI, I imagine. It would give you a little more history.
This car, built in 1986, is in the DeTomaso Registry, with details from previous offers for sale, and it is listed as originally being imported by George Stauffer, back in 1987 I believe.
