Piston ring gap

I am installing new Mahle pistons and rings that are file to fit. My problem is the oil expander ring seems too large. I placed it in the cylinder to check the gap and the only way I can get them in is to over lap the ends. I know that not right. The rail rings fit fine. Has anyone trimed the expander ring to fit?

The oil rings and expander are not file fit only the top 2 compression rings.
the expander does compress down to fit it the borecheck the oil rings fit with no overlap.
