Pocono Helmet Requirement

Special Application - SA - helmets are designed, and tested, differently than a Motorcycle - M - helmet. They are more expensive.

Main difference, as I understand it, is a car can roll, over and over sometimes, and each roll has the potential to slam that helmet into something hard. Motorcycle crash is brutal, but not normally a series of impacts.

If Pocono requires an SA, they are being very cautious, but very safe. I suggest hitting eBay and an internet search for more affordable SA helmets. The vendors, and stores, you can use for finding the size/style you want. Then go find it a good price elsewhere.

The SCCA has dropped its approval of the SA95 helmet, they now only allow SA2000 or SA2005 helmets, Pocono is just following common practice.

What few people understand about crash helmets is that the properties of the fiberglass shell and the styrofoam insert change over time, a helmet is considered NO LONGER SAFE at about 7 years of age. The shell and insert will no longer protect your head as designed.

I went to the Pegasus Auto Racing web site and found a "Pyrotech" brand helmet for $249, a "Bell" brand helmet for $289 and a "Simpson" brand helmet for $389. All SA2005 approved.

I personally buy a brand new helmet every 2 years .. with the sweat they get a little stinky .. but I like an open face Bell Mag 4 289.00 .. I think my head is worth that much ... LOL

My wife tells me I don't need a helmet......my head is harder than anything its likely to run into!!!

Is open face acceptable or only full faced helmets at Pocono?

I raced with open face ... its snell sa2005 so I assume its ok ...

The Vegas regs allow M2005 for all but the "A" group. Is this not the same for Pocono?
