The latest POCA Profiles and Newsletter arrived today, great Profiles issue by the way and I love the spread on Richard Brotton's '81 Pantera in the UK.

The sign up sheet and technical info. for the Vegas track event is also detailed in the Newsletter and being a complete novice where road race competition is concerned, but wanting to sign up for the track event I'm seeking some advice on helmet types and designations.

Permissible listed helmets are SA95, M95, SA2000, M2000, SA2005 or M2005. I'm under the impression that the 'M' designation is for 'Motorcycle' and 'SA' for 'Snell Association' and hence the latter is better due to more stringent roll bar impact tests, correct? Also I'm assuming the higher the number, the more recent the certification it applies to, thus I arrive at an SA2005 helmet being the best to get...How am I doing so far?

If I'm purchasing a helmet I'd like to get the best possible, a) to protect what little 'grey matter' I have left and b) bearing in mind I might want to do some other track or local SCCA trials events at some point.

Thanks,
Julian

Hey Joules,

I got the same info, have the same plan and have been checking out Simpson, Arai, Bell and all the others. Quite a lot to choose from. I guess a SA2005 is the best bet as it will be good for few years.

Let me know what you decide on. And, oh yeah, which car are you bringing - the green machine or the awesome new "non-colored" one?
Deeb,

Summit Racing is just across town from me and I looked on their website. The G-Force Pro-Force (SA2005 comlient) in plain black or white sells for $250 which sounds pretty reasonable, compared to the more pricey Arai & Bell alternatives. For an extra $30, you can even get it in a fancy flames paint scheme.

I learnt from my motorcycle days that you need to try different style helmets on and find something that is comfortable, heads differ in shape and size!.

Which Pantera to bring to Vegas? Decisions.. but I'm betting the GT5 will win. I'm actually hoping to take the green one off the road and start a 'restomod' (almost said 'restoration').

To be PC in a scientific spectrum type World wouldn't the GT5 be the 'all colored' one as white light is produced by a combination of all colors, 'no color' is black.... Big Grin
Can't wait to see the COZMOBILE in Vegas. Your green car looks darn good. Does it really need the resto mod?

As for white and black, mix some colour together to make white. Oops. Can't be done. And white also reflects light.

But black (well, almost black) is easily produced mixing a few colours together. And black absorbs light. Interesting.

Anyhow in the past 30 yrs all my cars have been either black or white. And while black is probably more beautiful on any car, it is impossible to keep clean. The original white paint on my GT5 hardly shows up all the cracks, chips and blemishes!

Yes and NO.

Special Application - SA - is the top level of helmet. M helmet testing is less repetitive than SA. All the rating levels are tested to Snell Assoc. ratings. In a car you may be subject to a continuing series of impacts as the car rolls and you flay around inside it hitting roll bars, windows and trees Wink ; the testing reflects this.

I bought an M helmet, closeout at a cycle shop for under $100. Once or twice a year didn't seem to warrant the big bucks for the SA - the difference in testing is not that different.

Make sure the helmet has the Snell tag attached somewhere in the inside of the helmet - perhaps under the lining sections. Mike Drew WILL need to find that tag.

And yes, each helmet fits different. And I prefer the full face style.

YMMV

I took ShotGunGrooms advice and got a good buy on this used race car helmet off Ebay. I definitely feel a lot safer in it and it is really good looking what with the chrome and all. And, Larry, you'll be glad to know, it came with that Smell thing. (Oh, and by the way, I'm not trying to be nit-picky here but I think you mispelled that Smell word in your post. Snell?) Anyway, I used a little Lysol and aired it out a couple of days and it's fine now. I can hardly wait to clean up out on the track in Parhup.

I'm not sure if I should let you guys in on this little secret but when I am driving the Pantera with this helmet on, I am definitely a babe magnet, especially when I use a couple of DeTom's pickup lines. (Thanks, good buddy, they really work!) Between that musky, smell tag thing from the helmet and that race-car-guy image, it really turns 'em on. My only problem is that it's just not very comfortable driving around in it. One of my best car guy friends says I should put a small hole in the roof. I'm not really sure that's the best thing to do, though. You guys are pretty cool and have given me some pretty good advice in the past so what do you think? Would a small hole in the roof hurt the babe magnetism of the car?

I bought my full face OMP helmet from Dave & Linda Adler. I think they are still dealers for OMP, but I guess you would have to check with them or Page to find out. Since I race year round the cost was worth while. If you are buying a helmet, I would go for the SA2005, since some racing venues will soon not accept the SA2000 helmets.
