hi,all.well we decided since the gas tank leaks causing a hazard,we'd pull the engine and fix that right away.question:do you have to pull the engine to remove the roof antena?just kidding.but this is my first mid-engine,transaxle engine removeal so thing seem a little ass backwards, things were going good until we got to the motor mounts, there frozen on so we sprayed the down with liquid wrench and let them set over nite.were going to use j.b.weld for the gas tank repair if we can.the other thing is that opening 2"x4" window at the top left of the transaxle, whats that for?will have to stuff a rag in there so nouthing gets in there, the other thing thats got me concerned is dropping ??? down into the transaxle,we are diffently going to figure that out before we start taking them apart,in our opion from getting a good look underneath, the rust damage seem to be and easy repair.one more quike question, what the best way to remove the undercoating from the engine compartment?thanks much for your help i'll have the boy take pictures today, les

First off, that 2"x4" opening is on the bellhousing, not the ZF. In addition to being able to set timing marks on the flywheel that opening vents heat from the clutch. There is a plastic insert which is available to put in their for shows, but leave it out other than that, just over the hole like you plan to with a rag or use the plastic cover when working on the car.

Secondly, don't waste your time with JB Weld. You need to get that tank professionally cleaned and you have to get the old filter that has probably disintegrated out of the there.

Now is the time to modify the tank so that fuel leaves from the bottom via a hardplumbed fuel line. Eliminate having to pump the fuel out the top. But, get that thought of fixing a fuel tank leak with JB Weld, bring it to a professional tank shop or you will have an engine fire and have wasted your time and probably have to watch your car burn up.
Les, I'm not sure there is necessarily a "best" way of removing the undercoating. Mine was a piece of cake, almost all of it chipped off in chunks with a paint scraper. I've heard everything from using torches to aircraft paint remover to diesel fuel. Go to the top of the page where it says "Find" and type in "undercoating". Also do a "Find" on "engine compartment". These will give you several ideas.
