The chrome on my doors has been painted black and I want to get back to the bare metal.

So, my first question is, is it chrome or is it just plain old stainless steel?

Depending on the answer to the above, what would be the best and safest way to remove the paint. I was thinking of masking off the areas I don't want effected and carefully applying paint stripper with a small brush. Then poliushing up with a chrome/steel cleaner like Autosol

Any thoughts are appreciated.

I believe PCNC member Bob Benson has returned his blacked out trim to bright stainless with steel wool or brillo pads (the green scrubby pads used for dishes). He would pick on section at a time each evening, mask off the paint or anything he didn't want the steel wool to damage with some blue tape, then begin applying elbow-grease.

The trim is beautiful and you'd never know it was painted black at one time.
