That's what will happen to you with 4000+ hp. Talk about fun! Couple Maydayed during the week with blown engines usually burned pistons. Rare Bear had a different problem at the end of the race he was stuck at full throttle. He had to wait till the aircraft landed to shut down his engine and glide in. Not an easy thing with a huge windmilling prob, extreme low aspect ratio wings and huge gear. As the last guy was landing he said he had 30 gal of fuel left which at full throttle was just a couple minutes.

He shut the engine off and circled for a beautiful landing. Spectacular!
It was their worst year in that 3 guys were killed earlier in the week. Friday they stopped the races to re-group.

On the other hand it was the the best year to be at the races seeing Rare Bear with their new owners take a smashing come back! Everyone knew if the Bear could have some pone put real money in it it would be unstoppable. The P-51's were not much of a threat and dominated the slower races. Next to the Bear the Hawker Sea Fury was dominating the race. It's been thought for years they would have their day. They are a Magestic and proud bird which make the P-51 look average:

I have been modeling Rare Bear for about 10 years. Here is a sport version which I have flown in several events; 100cc, 10hp, about 34lbs and runs about 150mph:

Here is another one with more detail I have a few flights on but is undergoing re-paint. I made the articulating retractable landing gear for this one:

Used to enjoy seeing all the planes every year when I lived in Reno.
Do they still bring them into Reno b4 the races for display?
I remember seeing them taxi Rare Bear from the airport down the street to what was Harra's at the time, very cool.

They Might but I didn't go down town. I hit the races at 7am, back to the motel at sunset. Back to the races. Not much night life after being on the ramp all day.
