WHEN I GOT INTO MY CAR THIS PAST WEEK-END I NOTICED THAT THE HEAD-LINER HAS COME LOOSE AND IS SAGGING. IT SEEMS TO BE LOOSE ALL THE WAY AROUND AS IF IT WOULD FALL OUT IF I REMOVED THE RETAINING MOLDINGS ON THE SIDES.
IS THIS EASILY OWNER REPAIRED? IF SO WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE? OR SHOULD I SEND IT TO THE
AUTO UPHOLSTERY SHOP? I WOULD RATHER FIX MYSELF IF POSSIBLE. THANK YOU. JOHN

I saved my old material. I carefully took off as much of the old foam material off with a stiff nylon brush. The foam had deteriorated so bad that most of it came off fairly easy. Next I used a solvent and cloth to remove most of what was left. Test what ever you use in a hidden corner or edge to make sure you are not distroying the material. I found some foam backing at the local trim supply shop in the same thicknedd. A little 3m spray adhesive to attach the foam to the material. Next, adhesive on the foam and on the roof. Let it dry until it is tacky and stick it up. Get Help, You only have one shoot at this.
John, this is a very common problem: the headliner is foam-laminated vinyl. In time, the foam rots, releasing the vinyl. There are two tricks: first, scrape or wire-brush all the loose stuff off or it will affect the bond of the new stuff. You need not remove all traces of old adhesive, just the loose stuff. Second, use a high-temp adhesive to glue the new(or reused) headliner. Otherwise, the roof will heat up in the midsummer sun and relese the new glue, allowing your headiner to sag once again.
