Found this bit on Fox about AMC/3 mid engined prototypes. Commenter "noyb1" posted the following:

All the car companies were bragging that they were going to come up with a mid engine car in the late 60's including AMC, Ford, Chevy and a few others. Chevy had a prototype of the mid engine Corvette.
When the AMX was tested they found at 100mph the nose lift was too much and became uncontrollable. Reproductions generally include a small air deflector in front which makes it work but much more is known about that kind of air control now.
Of the car companies wanting to do a Mid engine car Pantera is the only car to pull the trigger. When it did the other car companies fell off the radar like a rock and backed out.
The story leading up to the Pantera is quite interesting. When DeTomaso was building race cars, Carol Shelby contracted DeTomaso to build 5 P70 race cars. Shelby wanted to branch out into different type of racing.
Just like Shelby, the crook he was, when the cars were just about done he told DeTomaso he did not have the money; too bad. This was who Shelby was and how he conducted business. Shelby left the country to Africa for 7 years to evade people he owed money, stole, customers, clients, and Mafia. When Shelby left he told the car guys, good luck with the Cobra Replica's because I did not have any.
When Shelby returned to America he sued everyone who made Cobra Kit cars.
When Shelby stiffed DeTomaso, DeTomaso wanted to begin building production cars. DeTomaso used the P70 race car chassis design to built a car called the Mangusta. They built about 550 of them. Mangusta was the name chosen for "Cobra Killer" as his response to Shelby.
Ford approached DeTomaso about a Ford mid engine car and in 11 months they went from drawing board to production on the Pantera.

Just wondering if anyone here can comment on this bit of info - true or not?

Yeah, It’s the real car alright, but has a new nose on it. Not exactly correct, but close. It’s a barn find for sure. Carroll had deTomaso build six chassis for this project but then backed out when deTomaso didn’t deliver the 7 liter engine on the small block (hence the P70 name) deTomaso then had five Chassis left. He made a similar looking sports racer to FIA specs (the “real one” was done to Can Am specs and wouldn’t qualify to race over there, so he made a “copy” that would.) Then…mad at Carroll (because he didn’t get paid) he vowed to beat him at his own game and race against him in the GT World’s Championship in ’66. So he built the “Mongoose” (Mangusta) to kill the Cobras on the remaining frames and then went into production with them as street GTs when the FIA put size limit of 3 liters on GT engines. That’s one of the reasons the Ford and Shelby GT program was ended in ’65 in favor of the Proto Ford GT40s with 7 liter engines (which originally were going to run as GTs)
From what I understand, Shelby's story about the engine was a crock. Peter Brock actually helped with parts of the P-70. The P-70 came along at the same time Brock developed the Daytona Coupe. Shelby was about the only one in the shop to back Brock on the Daytona Coupe.

When they ran it on a track and found it to be a few seconds faster then the Cobra and a lot faster at high speeds, Shelby made everyone focus on the Daytona coupe.

The first race with the Daytona Coupe, they were in the lead. They were in the pits in a hurry to fix some things and Shelby kept yelling to top the gas. Everyone said they already had but he would not stop so they dumped another load of gas on the already full tank, spilled a bunch and started a fire. Some people were hurt and the car was damaged and they still felt they could get it going again.

Shelby blew a gasket and shut the whole thing down.

Ironically after all the big wins with the Daytona Coupe in Europe, Shelby was looking at which was cheaper, bringing the cars home or dumping them in the ocean. Turned out the fees to dump them in the ocean make it cheaper for him to bring them home.

Peter Brock designed the Daytona coupe but really rushed it for racing. Superformance (which Shelby had previously sued) talked to Brock about building a Daytona Coupe for their company. Brock said no I do do kit cars. They said you don't understand come visit.

Superformance brought him in and gave him the keys to R&D. They said either you do it or we don't do it. What Brock did for Superformance is FINISH designing the Daytona Coupe. The Superformance Coupe is not a replica but a continuation of Brock's work. They did 200+mph first time out with air conditioning.

Latter, Shelby weaseled in and got his name put on the car. It is no longer called the Brock coupe but instead the Shelby Coupe.

Brock would not talk to Shelby for many years although they mended ways latter. In an interview with Brock in a recent I think Road and Track he talked about DeTomaso. He said DeTomaso brought him into the plant when they were working on the P-70. DeTomaso yelled at the crew. He turned to Brock, laughed and said "look at how they all cower when I yell at them!". Brock said DeTomaso, Enzo and others were all assholes. He said one person he respected was Parnelli Jones.
A Brock version of the P70 story I remember is that Shelby felt left-out because Ford didn't include him in the GT40 program, so he commisioned DeTomaso to build the P70. He sent Brock to Italy to over-see the project.

Brock put his best effort into seeing that a worthy race car was built for Shelby.

Jumping ahead to the end of the story, Shelby instructed Brock to return to the states without an explanation. When Brock returned he found Shelby involved with the GT40 race cars. Shelby no longer had a need for the P70, which is why he called Brock back, and why he didn't pay DeTomaso.

Opinions of DeTomaso aside, he got stiffed by Shelby.
