And for my next trick I will be restoring the shifter parts on my car{2264}. The shifter is stiff before connected to the ZF. Clean and lube all parts is the plan. Any more improvements?
Either cutting down the shifter level, or purchasing a shiftr knob that shortens the throw. I hate to modify a part like the shifter level as they are hard to find, but some vendors sell a knob that sets lower and reduces the throw. Worth considering.

When I had my ZF out for a rebuild I went through the shift linkage. My shift arm was grooved from contact with the shift gate, so I removed it and had it shortened at a local welding shop. If it had been in pristine shape, I would not have modified it, but since it was already damaged, it worked out perfectly. While it was out, I removed the spring and hat at the bottom of the shifter box that is supposed to aid proper positioning of the shift arm as you shift. Without this, the shifter moves looser and smoother. Inside the ZF shifter box there is another set-up like this, so you still feel the linkage "click" into place just fine. Next, I pulled the long shift rod that disconnects inside the center console, goes through the firewall, and ends up at the ZF shifter box. It was seriously bent and the surface was rough from paint and light rust. I purchased a new one. At the same time, I purchased a new Tri-union bearing and replaced the old support. This is the "eye bolt" thing bolted to the frame below the driver side exhaust header that supports the long shift rod. These improvements helped my car's shifting feel immensely. Your car may not need all of them, but each is something to consider while you're at it. Later, Mooso.
I highly recommend Mc's shift knob, boot and shift pattern plaque. You won't believe what the knob does for shifting till you try it. The pattern plaque is helpfull too if you have momentary senior moments. Right DT?
Also, it's nice stuff. He does some seriously nice work.
