When I had my ZF out for a rebuild I went through the shift linkage. My shift arm was grooved from contact with the shift gate, so I removed it and had it shortened at a local welding shop. If it had been in pristine shape, I would not have modified it, but since it was already damaged, it worked out perfectly. While it was out, I removed the spring and hat at the bottom of the shifter box that is supposed to aid proper positioning of the shift arm as you shift. Without this, the shifter moves looser and smoother. Inside the ZF shifter box there is another set-up like this, so you still feel the linkage "click" into place just fine.
Next, I pulled the long shift rod that disconnects inside the center console, goes through the firewall, and ends up at the ZF shifter box. It was seriously bent and the surface was rough from paint and light rust. I purchased a new one. At the same time, I purchased a new Tri-union bearing and replaced the old support. This is the "eye bolt" thing bolted to the frame below the driver side exhaust header that supports the long shift rod.
These improvements helped my car's shifting feel immensely. Your car may not need all of them, but each is something to consider while you're at it.
Later, Mooso.
