I've read through here but haven't quite seen the same problem in previous posts. '74 everything great then I got on it off a stop sign a few weeks ago and it didn't shift right into second. Matter of fact I couldn't get anything but 3rd and 5th and drove it home that way. Starting reading and ended up pulling out the self centering spring at the shifter and made a big difference and thought that solved it but it didn't fully. No rhyme or reason random gears won't catch right. If it doesn't hit 1st I go up to 2nd then it will go into 1st ok. If it won't catch 5th I go back to 4th and then 5th catches ok. Same through all the gears. Sometimes 2nd won't catch then I go to 3rd and back to 2nd and it catches. Seems more when the pressing on the gas more than casual shift. The motor mounts seem fine and I don't see anything different with the linkage. The U-Joint right before the trans has some play side to side but it seems like it should. Also seems the longer I drive the worse it gets. It wasn't a gradual thing it's just like something broke. Any suggestions to check would be appreciated.

I had a similar issue where the car would not go into first gear. The shift bar trunnion had come loose and made it so 1st would not engage.
when was the last time you changed the ZF fluids? I recently switched back to castrol from redline and that has made a difference in the feel as well
Thank you. I have had the car a year and half and haven't changed it yet. What is the specific oil I should use?
Is your shift lever centered in the gate? Grease the trunion bearing. Check free play at the clutch slave. It could be a lot of things. Probably nothing that hasn't been discussed before, so forum searching will give you more ideas.
The only thing I can add is:
from my try and error on adjusting the shifter it became clear that just 0.5 mm at the rear nut pair for adjustment makes a sever difference..
Make sure it's not something simple like air in the system, change fluid anyway if you haven't already.
...Second try from a lower/Higher gear, then goes IN OK. Sounds like a Clutch Not DISengaging FULLY. Or the Syncros are Blown. How hard/Fast did You shift Into Second after that Stop Sign? Get Rid of the Gates!! MJ
A friend's car had a similar problem. I centered the shifter and checked the torque on the u-joint pinch bolts, which were tight. A test drive revealed no joy. The problem turned out to be one of the shift shaft's splined ends was moving in the u-joint even though the pinch bolt was very tight. I recentered the shifter and tightened the carp out of the offending pinch bolt. Problem solved.
