Side mirrors, what is everyone else using?

My '72 Pantera has the little, plastic "California" side mirrors and my room mate broke one yesterday. Didn't mind too much because I don't like those mirrors anyway (cheap, kind of ugly, and not very functional).

Today I picked up a new set of aftermarket mirrors from PI. They glue to the window, which means I'm not likely to put them on anytime soon because I have holes in the door where the old mirror was. And tonight I test fit the mirrors and found that the metal bar that seperates the little traingular window from the side window is right in the line of sight. Plus the mirrors don't break away.

Got on ebay and found a TON of side morrors from just about every make and model car out there. Even found some more "California" mirrors so I can plug my holes for now. But what I'd really like to find is a high quality, door mounted (fixing my line of sight and plugging my existing holes) mirror with the "break away" ability. Almost ALL of the factory mirrors break away, avoiding damage from said room mate.

Any ideas? My corvette mirrors would almost work, but they're a little too wide where they mount to the door, and they do so at the wrong angle as well.

I installed the PI mirrors last summer. (glued on) I think they look pretty good compared to the original ford mirrors. I have blacked out trim also. When glued on, I held them in place with clamps for over 24 hours. Been to Vegas and back and there still glued on! (knock on wood) As far as the holes, I used little nylon plugs. My car is white so there not to noticeable. Good Luck...Curt

I use the PI mirrors after using the factory Mustang type mirrors and then using the Italian imported 80s style off of Evil Bay. The PI mirrors work the best as far as seeing around the car. I fabricated a skinny sheet metal plate to cover the existing holes in the car using the original screws from the first mirrors to hold the plate on until I had the holes fixed properly. Vince

Mirrors are a personal taste issue.

When shopping for mirrors, I looked at the size of the mirror. To my eye, some mirrors are proportionally too large for the Pantera, others are too small. The PI mirrors, for example, are too large in my opinion, & the triangular mounting base creates a bit of a blind spot.

The Vitaloni mirrors that were oem on the Patera in the '80s is about the right dimensions, to my eye. The early '80s Dodge Colt mirrors are still popular with many owners. A bit dated looking though.

Steve Wilkinson has some attractive mirrors as well, about the right size & more modern looking.

I am going to use the mirrors from Pro-formance, they are pretty much the same as the PI glue on models. I am getting some paint/bodywork done to the car so he will fill the holes and blend in the color and he is going to reclear the whole car. The picture of the GT5 mirrors Gary pulled from Wilkinson's website are the '80s vintage Vitaloni mirrors I referred to in my first post, they have the "break-away" feature you're looking for. Here's a picture of the Wilkinson mirror I also referred to (no break away feature), I think these are the long version, there's also a short version:

I have had the glue on mirrors on my car since 1991. They have never been a problem but they do not break away.

I am not very happy with the view from them and I am thinking of trying some mirrors from a 993 Porsche. I have one and love the view from them and they are about the right size but have not attempted it yet.

I just bought a pair of Vitolini Baby Turbo so I can put them on after the California type. Had to fill in the holes and then I had to paint the car. At least that's the story I told my wife about the $160.00/pair mirrors that I had to buy cause the holes were still there.The new mirrors look great.

I installed electric mirrors from a 94 mustang. I made the quarter window out of lexan and fabbed a speaker box that houses a 1" tweeter. I used the hole in the box to mount the mirror. Took about 2 days to complete and some modifying the mirror to get the horizontal angle right, but was worth the effort for me. Plus, you can install the mirrors with the turn signals in them which os something I may do at a later date.
