Pony cars are not pony sized any more. That is one my main beefs about a lot of these new retro muscle cars. They are HUGE. The Camaro, Challenger, Mustang, all much larger than their predecessor.

One thing that is driving automotive design is the "pedestrian friendly" regulations. You need a nice big soft and round hood to coddle the wayward pedestrian who wanders out into traffic while texting on their smart phone. Mad

A pre-L Pantera at speed will simply slice them cleanly off at the knees, and toss them up and over the car. Smiler

Totally agree. The simple philosophy of low & wide with some nice lines and some rake to the design is entirely lost in favor of chunky verticle design. If I had to make myself buy one of those new cars, the Challenger seems to have a little more appeal than the other run of the mill "chunkies". I have seen some of the "chunkies" lowered or modified somehwat, which looks better to me anyway; however the overall chunky build still remains. Then I saw a Charger the other day and it was actually a 4 door...hello!!!! I think the major designers like Foose, etc have taken some of the cars and designed them much better. I guess its just like anything such as music, cars or what ever, it is a matter of opinion. I have always thought a muscle car should stand out, but to do so now you have to take them to customizers. Sorry, I think I got off in nowhereland onto another subject.
All the sports-coupes today are bulky and weigh nearly 2 tons ready to drive. In a POCA newsletter a few years ago, I wrote an Andy-Rooney-type article titled "Why Are They So Darn Heavy"? I discovered years ago when I was commuting in an '87 Fiero- which everyone thinks is a small car, I parked it next to the Pantera one day. Our stock-body L-model Pantera was an inch shorter, an inch lower and an inch narrower than the 'little' Fiero, by actual tape measure. Matter of fact, I use a Fiero car cover and it fits the Pantera L -with its 'big' bumpers- perfectly. IMHO, T. Tjaarda did a magnificent job of packaging two people and a fairly large engine in a very small envelope.
Here is a photo of my car next to a 2010 Camaro. This was taken before my motor or transaxle were in the car and before my new Koni’s were installed, so the car is sitting very high in the back.

I included a photo with the snowmobile because I thought it was funny. It reminds me of those hunting or fishing photos when a person pushes the “monster fish” or “giant elk” as close to the camera as they can to make the fish or elk look bigger than it really is.

Even with the snowmobile being closer to the camera it was amazing how really small it made the Pantera feel.

We moved to a place with a parking garage a couple of months ago. I had been parking the Porsche in my spot while the Pantera was in the shop. I could glance into the garage from the building entrance and always see the Porsche roof and wing above the generic Japanese econo car that parks in the space next to it. Last week I parked the Pantera there and it is completely hidden. Hopefully it is still there. Smiler
In addition to the safety of pedestrians the airbags and crash requirements add weight and size. Strict rollover requirements are the reason you can't see past an A pillar anymore. My 2006 evo weighs 300 pounds less than the 2008, because of the requirement for side airbags. Mitsubishi didn't even bother selling the car here as an 07 because they had just done a refresh before the new regulations went into effect. When I get a chance I will post A picture of them side by side. The evo is way bigger, but only weighs 200 lbs more.
