Other than the cover for the windshield wiper motor, the '71 cars only had one splash shield. It is located at the right rear (forward of the tire).

Just to be clear, the gas tank still has a heat shield that wraps around to the rear of the gas tank, which acts as a stone shield.

This shield stops at the top of the gas tank, leaving a huge opening for rocks, water, and debris (kicked up by the tire) to collect between the gas tank and the body.

There are TSBs on splash shields- Bulletin 6, article 42 and Bulletin 9, article 67 from Ford/DeTomaso on how to add an extension to the original rear splash shields (done by dealers during routine service).
TSBs were sort of like a low-key recall program. Frankly, I'd rather have more protection/safety than an absolutely as-delivered factory-correct car to enjoy driving, but that's just me......
