I know the square came first, does anybody know around what number the change was made to round?

My gut feel is that there is no exact chassis number which is the cutoff. As with most design changes they tended to phase them in.
I have 1826 with square and 2281 with rounded. But there was not a single vin where they changed.
Okay great info Mark. I have 1479 (square), and 2713, but it came with no bumpers, so if 2281 came with rounded, that tells me mine should be rounded.
My pre-L #2548 is a January '72 build, and has the square ones. My understanding is that all of the service parts back in the day were the rounded ones. This might explain earlier cars having the "later" style.
Still good enough, that means there's enough confusion that it doesn't matter anyway. 
#2036 has straight cuts front and rear and a flat trunk.

For the early cars, Alejandro was cutting someone else's bumpers, hence the "straight cuts." Does anyone know whose?
The list of parts sourced from a another manufacturer is quite long for our cars, but in 20 years, I’ve never heard the square cut bumpers were sourced from some other vehicle.
certainly possible, be interesting to see if anybody chimes in with more information
