It still happens yes, but at what price? It wasn't a $100.
That story was in HOT ROD a year or so ago. They had a lenghty article about that. Some of the trailers had been parked door to door and welded together so you could not get access. In the article the new owner stated that he paid a six figure price for this stash and had been seeking buyers that were offering mid to high six figure numbers to buy him out.
The guy who put all those cars was either very paranoid or eccentric!

As of a couple years ago that stash had been bought and sold a couple times with different things parted out of the collection. He had a huge stash of engines. He had a habit of removing the numbers matching engine in case the car got stolen. That way when he recovered the car he would still have the correct engine.
