JIM, ALL I CAN TELL YOU IS WHAT I READ ON THE WIREING DIAGRAM THAT COMES IN THE LATEST TECHNICAL MANUAL THAT YOU CAN PURCHASE FROM MOST ALL THE VENDERS. IT SEEMS TO BE RIGHT ON WITH MY 74L. THERE ARE 2 SENSORS THAT ACTIVATE THEIR RESPECTIVE FAN RELAYS AND IN TURN, TURN ON THAT FAN. HERE GOES: PASSENGER FAN SENSOR IS RATED AT 158 DEGREES F. THE DRIVERS SIDE SENSOR IS RATED AT 176 DEGREES F. OBVIOUSLY THE PASSENGER SIDE WILL COME ON FIRST. ALTHOUGH SOME OF THE EARLIAR MODELS HAD THE PASS. SIDE COME ON WITH A THERMOSTAT,(DON'T KNOW IF IT IS THE SAME RATING), WHILE THE DRIVERS SIDE WAS TURNED ON WITH A SWITCH ON THE CENTER GAUGE PANEL,(I BELIEVE IT WAS THE BOTTOM MOST SWITCH),AT THE DISCRETION OF THE DRIVER. HOPE THIS ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION. REGARDS, MARLIN.
I WILL ADD, THAT WHEN I PURCHASED MY CAR, THE DRIVERS SIDE FAN RELAY WAS BURNED OUT. I FOUND OTHER RELAYS THAT WERE SUPPOSED TO BE BEEFY ENOUGH FOR FANS, BUT THESE BURNED OUT IMEDIATELY (THEY WERE NO WHERE NEAR THE QUALITY OF THE ORIGINAL, REMAINING RELAY). IT SEEMED BOTH SENSORS WERE IN DOUBT, BECAUSE ON ONE SHORT TRIP NO FANS WERE COMING ON, ALTHOUGH THE OLD RELAY STILL TESTED GOOD. MY SOLUTION WAS TO WIRE BOTH SENSORS TOGETHER IN PARALLEL (NOT SERIES)TO GROUND THE GOOD RELAY AND ACTIVATE THE DRIVERS SIDE FAN.(WIREING THE SENSORS THIS WAY PUTS IT IN AN "EITHER/OR" CONFIGURATION). SOON I PLAN TO RIG IT TO A LED TEMP GAUGE,THAT YOU CAN PROGRAM AT WHAT TEMPERATURE YOU WISH TO ACTIVATE THE RELAY. LASTLY, THE PASSENGER FAN WAS WIRED WITH NO SENSOR, NO RELAY, BUT WAS WIRED TO COME ON CONTINUOSLY WHEN THE IGNITION KEY IS IN THE "RUN" POSITION. MARLIN
I don't run any rad temp sensors to actuate the fans. I find the stock ones to be a constant source of water leaks and non-operation, and the aftermarket ones iffy. My rt fan comes on with the key and the left one by means of the lowest console switch when I note the engine temp climbing. It was wired that way when I got the car in 1980, and I just never saw a need to change it.
