Having seen quite a few Panteras both in Europe and the US, it never ceases to amaze me the clever technical solutions some people come up with. And some of those technical solutions are posted on forums like this, but some are not, and are thereby kept “secret” to the rest of the DeTomaso community. A shame. So why not make a catalogue of those ideas? Right here?

My thinking is to have “unique” ideas posted here. Each idea only one post, so we don’t get pages and pages of the same complex thing. And then if the reader wants to know more, he can follow a link or pm the author.

I put “unique” in ‘“s’, because you never know. Somebody else might have done the same, or very similar. This is not about “I invented…”, and it’s not about patented solutions, it’s about sharing the ideas. So if you safety wired your ZF, probably a good idea, but probably not that uncommon, so not applicable here.

So here are the rules I suggest:
1. “Unique” ideas only
2. Max one post per idea
3. Technical, not body work, not “I put pink leather inside”…
4. No criticism or “I have a better idea” or “this won’t work because”… If you have another/a better idea, just post it, and let the reader be the judge…

If George agrees, I’m sure he’ll help police this. And might even make it a Sticky if we all contribute? I’ve posted this on Alessandro’s, it should maybe be in Technical, but there’s no overriding Technical area, it’s split into Coach, Engine etc. And this Technical Idea Catalogue should hopefully address a lot of technical things. George, up to you..

Let me start things off with 4 ideas that I think are kinda “unique”, going from the rear to the front:

Easy and Cheap offset air filter

There are many solutions out there, but I doubt few give as much filtering area as a normal 14” round filter. The problem with a higher intake is that there’s no room for 14” due to the rear lid. But Spectre now has a cheap offset base, 4768, available on ebay for $30. On a side hung Holley it may fit without modification. But on a center hung Holley you have to drill a hole in the rear part for the float adjustment nut/bolt. And you have to cut away a bit of the filter element.

But it’s easy and cheap compared to other solutions, and you can get as much filter area as you want, you can get these 14” elements in any height, depending on whether you want to be able to see out the rear window.

Note in picture, left to right:
S-shape rod, base with hole drilled so adjustment nut/bolt sticks up, air filter element upside down to show cut-out to clear nut/bolt

Seat relocation

Simply put, I’d like the seat more to the right, to better align with steering wheel, pedals and shifter. Simple rails and 4 brackets welded to the bottom of the original rails, moves this seat about 1½” to the right. Once you’ve sat in a Pantera with the seat properly aligned to the rest of the car, you never want to go back!

Separate start button

Maybe not that unique, but wiring probably is, and that gives a unique advantage. Most have experienced hard hot starting because the performance based early ignition timing works against the starter. A solution is of course to have less ignition advance, but then you might lose power. So it’s better to build a solution like the dragracers do, they cut off the ignition when running the starter, and only turns on the ignition when the starter has the engine turning fast enough.

Similarly to that I’ve wired the starter button to the Accessory circuit (using a relay). So if I turn the key to Ignition and push the starter button, it will start as normal, but if I turn the key to Accessory and push the starter, the engine will turn (fast) and I then turn the key from Accessory to Ignition and the engine starts.

This allows me to have earlier initial timing, and therefore make more power, and still be able to start.

Front lid lifting modification

For details, see link below

The short version is to use an old too weak gas shock on the front lid. Works perfectly, no rod needed, no need to be on the left side of the car, will stay up in most weather, doesn’t slam down, goes down slowly

One modification I have done is added variable fan speed control for the heater / AC fan. Primarily allows you to slow it down so it is not so noisy. I re-purposed the instrument dimmer knob as the speed control with an appropriate potentiometer, so there is no extra knob that looks out of place. Simply splice the instrument light wires together so they get full power all the time. I don't have any photos of the mod, but here is where I got the speed controller:

The purpose for having all the different forums is to make browsing a subject easier. A catch-all topic such as this defeats that purpose. Please post your ideas/solutions as individual topics in the appropriate forum.

If you want to help people "find" your topic, be sure to give it a good title. Titles like "Now What" or "Here's a good idea" do not give a clue as to what the topic is about. They do not help a person who is browsing for the solution to a specific problem.
Or set up a Customization How-To blog. It might be better suited as it would follow your format while allowing you to receive comments. As moderator, you could choose if they are published, or simply add to your posts any relevant feedback you receive.

People whom are interested may opt to follow postings and receive notifications when additions have need made.
