Just purchased a 74 Pantera. All original car with 20,000 miles, my question is the temp guage reads then stops. Is it a loose connection.

Probably. If the sender is still in the tank it may not be grounding well at the bracket. Check the rest of the connections, especially the grounds under the dash.
I second that!! Sounds like a bad/intermittent grounding at the sender or gauge, or under the dash at the drivers far corner, where 10 to 12 wires all come together for grounding at one screw. Marlin.
