Any tire experts out there?

Well, now that I broke the bank buying my new Kodiak wheels (haven't arrived yet), I can't splurge for the top-of-the-line tires. I ordered 315/35/17 Sumitomo HTRZ from Tirerack, but they phoned me and are essentially refusing to sell them to me claiming the tire may not be hearty enough for the Pantera. They are not actually sure, because they can't find official weight stats on the Pantera. The max load rating for the tire is 1433 lbs. Is that really a problem?

Are they:
a) really looking looking out for me?
b) just trying to push me into a pricier tire?
c) nuts?

The tire's reviews are good and the comparison report ranks them favorably.

The oem tire on the pre L Pantera, 215/70R15 radial, had a rating of approx 1600 lbs.

The Pantera L had H60-15s bias ply tires, I'm not sure what they were rated at.

The Yokohama, Goodyear & BF Goodrich tires in your size, 315/35R17, are rated at 1874 pounds. The Dunlop and Sumitomo are only rated at 1433 pounds.

In the 335/35R17 size, the Pirelli, Michelin & Kumho all have a rating of 2094 pounds, but the Dunlop is only rated 1609 pounds.

In order to achieve a certain speed rating, sometimes the manufacturers have to "back off" on the weight rating in order to keep the temps low enough to pass DOT testing.

My guess, Tire Rack must have been stung with a liability suit recently and are gun shy.

If they are made aware of the oem size, I would think they will sell you any of the tires with equivalent or greater load rating.

My recommendation is the Yokohama, as they have produced the best street tires for the last couple of decades. This is not my opinion, but the consensus among many sports car type clubs with members involved in SCCA racing. These days, the Kumho tire is also getting high praise as a value leader. One thing you will find with Yokohama tires, they require very little in the way of balance weights to balance the tire. Choice Quality Stuff.
