I just got my car painted and we did all the trim in black. The standard procedure is to sand the stainless with 180 grit, spray on some metal etching primer, and then finish with the black.
If yours wasn't sanded, then you've got a chance. If yours was sanded, then you're going to have to try and rebuff all that trim after it is cleaned up. I don't know how successful that is going to be. I've been told it is possible with stainless, but that anything that was chromed is probably not going to turn out well.
