Long post, but it's been a long time coming...

Yesterday was a great day. Well, aside from the tornado and subsequent "Italian Mistress" misbehavings, all went perfectly.

You may recall that RobertVegas had posted his "first day" outing mishap, to which many of us chimed in with same. Mine of course was "in the past" and since I'm a genius now, I'm immune to these things. Right.

My car FINALLY arrived from Pat Mical's yesterday. Was getting back from coaching baseball on an awesome Saturday when the world's nicest and most careful trucker (no kidding) called and said, "I think your Pantera is happy to be home finally".

We unloaded the green beast, rolling it carefully off the enclosed hauler with yours truly at the helm, narrowly missing trailer inner fenders, loading ramps, and exhaust tips nipping at the asphalt. I fire the thing up and almost cry ("ALMOST", and I'm only telling you guys that.)

The feel, sound, smell, and vision that has filled my head both waking, sleeping, and in-between was alive. Real. The exhaust note sounded better (just a little biased here) than ANY V-8 I've heard in, well, forever.

I sat there, a man possessed, while my son filled the passenger seat. I told L.D. (the trucker) I'd be right back. So, with 1983 Michigan plates and about zero knowledge of the "working prowess" of the car, I zoomed off. First, click, second, click, third, click, decel, stop sign. If I'd had the gas I'd have gone to Vegas right then.

I went back, visited with my new forever friend L.D. We spoke of children, Christ, integrity, ambition, and the hereafter. Amazing guy. I paid him and he left. (He's bringing another car next week, so we'll visit again.)

My son and I "invented" an errand to go get another cell phone battery since mine held a charge for like, 5 minutes. Dark skies ahead, literally and figuratively. Tornadoes looming. The weather staion showed 'egg sized hail' in the area. Love does funny things, so we stole plates off my other car and drove the Pantera.

Got the cell phone battery, fully charged, and left for home. Serious wind. Car hiccups on low fuel. I put in 10 gallons, remembering that the gas in the tank is AT LEAST 6 months old.

I go about a mile, cough, sputter, "see you later" says the lovely exhaust burble and the car cuts off. "Exotic embarrassment" thread comes to mind. It's less funny than I remember.

Cars seeking sane shelter from the storm, crane to look at the idiot who's chosen a really preposterous place to park his little green knife.

Rain picking up. Car restarts, dies. Again. Cell phone battery was now very important and call for a tow. Raining seriously now. (Haggerty Flat Bed service is NOT an indulgence boys and girls.)

My dear wife gives us a ride home. Forty five minutes later, the tow driver calls to say policemen are telling people to get off the streets so he "must" cancel, and I don't blame him.

Heaviest rain clears and so does my head. I go to O'Reilly auto parts and get a fuel filter. I tell him it's for a Montego. For $4.60 I head to the world's wettest Pantera. Miraculously, I change the filter WITH THE AIR CLEANER mostly attached since it's still raining steadily and need all the combustion shelter I can muster.

My very wet blue jeans now weigh 47 pounds and from the back I appear to be an old white guy who's a Ludacris groupee.

I hop in, twist the key. Life resumes. It drove, pulled, shifted, stopped and sounded better than I'd ever hoped. I was the happiest, most-soaked motorist on the road, 32 year old demisting technology and all.

The mean green is finally home. I've one minor conquest alrady, and love every minute of it. It is just about too cool to believe. Remember, this is NOT a show car - - but it's my car and for now that'll have to do.

Soon as the very unPantera like weather clears I'll report more. Pictures too, I promise.

The wipers worked better than I did. I'm sure everbody on this board knows this but those are "late" TR6 switches (I think; I pretty sure I'm about to be corrected!) Remarkably though, rain was wiped, glass was defogged (on AC as we do in the south this time of year) and I could actually see... except for the red mist.

This sounds nuts (oh, like the rest of us AREN'T??) but I'm heading to the garage at 11:22 pm to go look at the car again.
When I hear these stories, I think how lucky I was!

I had left my 73 Pantera in my brother's garage in San Diego and moved to Pensacola, Florida.

Weeks later, I flew out, found the battery to be dead...so I jump started the car, went to K-Mart, got a battery, put it in in the parking lot and drove the car to Pensacola in 36 hours 15 minutes.

There were moments:
-forgot to check the oil till somewhere in Texas...dip stick was dry
-thunderstorm in Houston rush hour traffic
-repaved/gravel highway for ~30 miles
-rear Pirellis showing cord when I arrived

But what a trip!!!

Congratulations Adams! Great story with a great ending, which is really just the beginning.

I think I went out to the garage several times every night for the first 2 weeks I owned my car just to look at her and make sure it wasn't a dream. Enjoy!
Congrats on getting your baby back! I think that most of us can relate to everything you said. Most weeks I am so busy with work and all that I will go to the garage and look at the Pantera just to gain my sanity back, and then back to work ( my office is in my house). And a late night run in the Pantera is the greatest stress relief that I know! Again Congrats!
Congratulations on your reunion!!

I went back and read my "exotic embarrasment" thread and realized it didn't really communicate an important point...how much I love my car.

Mine is currently in the shop having the cooling system gone through, tune up and new carb. I hope next week I will get another "first drive".

Reading your post makes me realize I should call the shop and have that fuel filter replaced. :-)

Green for Alabama, white for Canada, how about red for NY?

Red for the tomato sauce on the Pizza? Hum?

The one big thing that I don't like about the Pantera is how people instinctively find the blind spot on the car and want to follow it there.

It is really hard for me to see someone sitting on my left shoulder. Especially a kid on a bike even if I'm only going 10 mph.

Well a thought on that. People are so f.....' stupid here they think a blind spot is a bar.
Yup, that must be it.

Of course we are now overpopulated with third world people who never drove a vehicle until they came to the US so what do I expect anyway?

At best there was one straght road on the island they came from. Now they actually have to make turns.

Oh no! I didn't offend anyone now like Imus did I hope? Sorry Rev. Sharpton, I won't do it again.

Al Shapton doesn't run the FCC like he thinks he does, but I could go on a tirade about how rappers use this language all the time, but whites can't. I'll hold back.

By the way, your car looks great!
Glad you are happy with the car. Very unusual colour that looks really well on the car. I know what you went thru, I have been without my car for three months, it is with Roger Brotton for some not so serious work, and I fly over to drive it back in a few days. On the way i will go to bristol for the italian Automoto festival where the car will be on show. We have managed to get a good group of Panteras to come and display there so hopefully i will have some good pics.
My car was also used in filming a new episode of the Used Car Roadshow last week. they wanted a top example of a late model Pantera for their show to be screened in may, and I agreed as my car was in Rogers place at the time which is only 10 miles from the ITV studio. Cant wait to see it on national TV.

Thanks for the "re-welcoming" of the car fellas. Steve, that is VERY exciting about your car on Television! You've got to get an early cut of that and share it with your Pantera pals.

I've sure had a ball with this car. I've made a seat repair, done a TINY bit of engine detailing, made a fix in a small split on my front bumper (actually turned out nicely) and plan to do some wheel detailing this weekend.

I'm holding off on the engine detailing 'til I get my 4300D redone by PonyCarb. Always another project it seems.

Overall though, I've so enjoyed having the car. Starts every time, shifts great (though kinda stiff) stops fine, handles WAY better than any other I've had and sounds incredible. Pat Mical has continued to be 'on call' for some nitty things.

I'm going to photograph the suspension and exhaust and stuff soon as I can get under there. The bottom of the car is cleaner than the top!

To cap it off, I got my issue of PI yesterday... great way to keep the enthusiasm high!
