What that is, is very shrewd marketing on the part of AGIP. Getting a factory fill contract is a prize among oil companies, and if you negotiate the ability to get your name on a maintenance placard, all the better. It goes on to this day.
General Italian Oil is the loose translation. I still saw AGIP signs in Italy in May, but the name is changing to eni and many of the gas stations had the signage change. Classic irony buying gas from AGIP.
