Wheel Well Splash Shield

I think that's what they're called. The rubber things that screw up in the wheel well. I've got one that's all messed up, I don't think I'll be able to get it to stay in.
Is there any replacement for these? Do people just take them out?
Mine rubs the tire so it is pretty worthless at this point.

So, it sounds like running without one isn't going to kill me.
I've used stuff like you mentioned as a backer in picture frames, tho what I had probably wasn't as strong.
