I was hoping someone could tell me what i can look at or check on my zf. a little background first. I bought this car in pieces and am putting it back together, it has 31 thousand on it and has sat for 12-14 years and i've put the engine and trany in it and hooked up the linkage with new bearing and oil in it. it will shift from 3rd into 4th and i think its in nutral now but its hard to go from side to side. I have not tried to adjust it yet. maybe it will loosen up as I play with it. It did have oil in it the whole time but i changed it to mobil 1 syn. thanks...paul

Check the rubber boot that the shift rod goes through on the firewall. My car spend a lot of time sitting and had the same problem as yours. I found the boot had dried and sealed old dirt and oil around the shifter rod. Its amazing what alittle cleaning and fresh lube can do. Shifter works just fine now.

Yes, the linkage moved fine and I replaced all of the rubber boots per hall's kit. and I have read all the teck. manuals and everything I can get a hold of on the car. I've cleaned everything and also have checked all the parts and replaced what ever it needed replaced. I think that the ZF has been replaced by the factory and also someone has safty wired it. I know that the dealership replaced the block. My brother is a parts manager at a local ford dealership and he is very good at parts I.D.ing.we are learning as we go and with his vast knowledge and help from you and all the books I got with the car we are working everything out. I am not sure of the ZF and how it works but if its O.K. and I don't have to get into it to deep we can figure out the rest. I am a little gun shy of this tranny, with all the horror stories of things breaking or going bad and the price of parts and labor I tend to worry about the posibilty of it having something wrong with it. So i wondered about the problem that i asked before. Is there only one way the shift linkage be hooked up? thanks... paul
I had a similar problem, I think. Mine was shifting fine one day and then the next I could not get third or fifth gears. I played with it and looked at the linkage. The U-joint or whatever you call it near the tranny had loosened and had pulled out some. I did not notice this at first and tried adjusting it a bit and ended up with the rod and the u-joint out of wack. I finally got the u-joint set correctly and then could not get reverse. I had to play with the someone holding the shifter in the middle and adjusting it, then holding it a bit off center. I finally got it right and it shifts fine now. Hope this helps, if you can understand my description.
