I am currently absorbing as much knowledge about Panteras as I can , before I start to actually look for an automobile. Question-what are the costs (ballpark) involved in having one of those bullet proof transmissions rebuilt. Also I am from central Texas (Austin). There does not appear to be any clubs locally. There is in Dallas and Houston. Does any one know of decent service and body mechanics that specialize in these cars, somewhere not to far off?
Any info would be appreciated.

I have had ZFs shipped to and from Wilkinson's in California (N.B. I am in central/eastern Canada). It cost under $200 each way by Yellow Freight Exact Express.

A ZF rebuild is highly dependent on what it needs. Gear sets are expensive. What I know is that an average rebuild is between $2500-$3000. You could get off less or you could pay more.

Sorry ... can't help you with clubs in Texas.

Agreed, I shipped a couple ZF's and its comes in around $200. Figure in one of the plastic crates it will weigh about 200lbs.

Figure $2500 just to open it up do an inpsection and maybe a saftey wire. Anything beyond that will be more $$, I'd say an average rebuild with a couple syncros will be closer to $5K nowadays.

That is why I am scared to hot up my pantera ! I have all the parts here ( alloy heads, roller cam etc) to build an easy 600hp but if I hurt the box I will be upset ! oh and it will cost more than $200 to send it to the repair shop !! Unless I strap it to a Kangaroo !
I needed synchros, so my ZF rebuild cost $4400 about 4 years ago.
Any Pantera with any shift issues is suspect. Don't fall for the "it probably just needs adjustment" line (like I did). While it is possible that poor shifting can be cured by replacing a bent shift rod, or a clutch slave cylinder, etc., you should consider any shifting problems as an indication that you will spend 5 grand to fix it. If you're not a do-it-yourselfer, then add a grand for pulling, reinstallation, and adjustment.
A properly shifting ZF is a big selling point. I would choose a decent car with a good ZF over a very nice car with shift problems. That 5 grand will buy a lot of bling!
