I'm still a bit confused about ZF transaxle types. For a brief period, I had a late 71 and a 72 Euro GTS sitting side by side so I could compare them. The 71, #2148 has a single large site hole on the top left bell housing as did the 72 GTS. Both had the plastic plug. The 71 ZF is attached at the very rear of the chassis under the AC condensor. The GTS, #4089 has the transaxle attached on the sides. The 71 had the .705 gearing based on the tag. Don't know what the 72 Euro GTS had for gearing but it felt different. Otherwise, both ZFs looked pretty much the same. Are they type 1, type 2 or one of each? How can you tell? Are the mounting points interchangeable?

If you look at the ID tag on the shift box in the lower left corner it will say:
ZF 5-DS25/1 or /2 or you can look at where the bellhousing bolts to the ZF. The dash 1 has 4-bolts holding the bellhousing in place and the dash 2 has 5 on the out side and 2 on the inside. All the mounting points are the same, and both dash 1 and 2 have or don't have fill plugs on the top.You can e-mail me a picture if you need to.
