Usually they wobble and make noise because the end that goes into the speedo has become frayed and has a bur on it somewhere. Sometimes, you can take it out and file it at the end just a little keeping it square and it will stop.
Otherwise, replacement is the only thing left. You should be able to actually pull the wire cable out and through the seleve without removing the cable jacket seleve. I did and was also able to push it back through.

About 100.00 from a vendor if you need a new one. Easily done of you completely take it out. Cable runs along inside the center console, usually on the drivers side through a hole in the firewall to the ZF. No big deal.
Try loosening the knurled nut at the 90 degree fitting going into the ZF a little. I tightened mine up, since it seemed loose one day. Then it displayed the same symptoms yours has, noise and jerking needle. So I loosened it back up and it got rid of the noise and jerking needle. The tighter cable to fitting seemed to cause the binding.
Keep in mind, the speedo cable is most likely turning in a sheath filled with 30 year old grease that has been repeatedly warmed up in the engine compartment. Its probably pretty sticky & gummy.

I would suggest pulling the cable, cleaning it with contact cleaner, and re-lubing it with my favorite Mobil 1 synthetic grease. Don't use a thick grease on a speedo cable, it creates the same problems you have now. A thin grease will liquify when hot and result in no lubrication.

when I pulled mine (speedo cable that is) I pulled it from inside the car and then slid it back in (again the speedo cable) the same way. You do have to be careful you don't get grease or solvents on your interior. The way I did it was to disconnect both ends, put the trainy end in a plastic bag and flushed it out. I then carefully used my air compressor to blow out the casing and then had an assistant help me slide the greased cable back in.
