1st gear engagement

Anyone have occasional difficulty engaging 1st gear from a complete stop? No problem ever while rolling. This is an RBT on a GT40 with no linkage problems. Some GT40 owners have confirmed same occasional difficulty solved by engaging 2nd and then 1st. Is this just a design quirk because the 1st gear synchro is on the pinion shaft? Trans was this way from new.

That is a symptom of the clutch not completely releasing. You may need to find a way to gain more thowout bearing travel.
