I'm not technically aware of what happens when the fibreglas insert is removed, but I removed mine several months ago and have been driving w/o it since then. I can see little or no difference in temp or performance. If anything I suspect the car may run a few degrees cooler. I plan to run twenty or so louvers and I believe they will give the air coming from beneath the car a place to exit. Lar
I REMOVED MINE THE FIRST DAY I BOUGHT MY CAR, AND HAVE NEVER NEEDED IT SINCE!! THAT IS IF YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT THAT HUGE TRUNK INSERT?(ENGINE COMPARTMENT) I AGREE,THE ENGINE MUST BE RUNNING COOLER FOR BETTER SURROUNDING AIR FLOW. GO ON! SHOW OFF THAT BAD 351C AND ZF EVERYTIME YOU OPEN THE "HOOD"!! IF IT DOES'NT FIT IN THE NOSE AREA, YOU DON'T NEED IT. REGARDS, MARLIN.
There was some discussion of air flow through the engine room and effects of trunk in and trunk out a few months back on the DeTomaso list. If you want to dig through the archives or post the question to the list, start with: http://realbig.com/mailman/listinfo/detomaso I think the end result was the air conditioning and top speed were better with the trunk in. Hot air is forced to go out the opening in the decklid. With the trunk out there is a lot of turbulence where the trunk would be and hot air fighting your condenser fan.
