were the original Engine blocks stamped with the vin# ?
or some other identifying number?

Not the VIN.
Engine number.
Stamped on the rear upper portion of the block just under the driver's cylinder head.

OK so my block has a number stamped on the back Drivers side. Should that number correspond with any other number on the car? I'm wondering if it's the original block.

You should have a tag in your engine bay that has an engine number.........
Mine is 874 04392 (I don't know what the prefix is - 4392 is stamped on my block).

It's just above the Emissions info.
