I was trying to find out if there are any good books out there that explain engine building. I am looking for something that is a more than the basics but not crammed with a bunch of formulas etc. I have some basic knowledge. thanks

there is a book sold by HP Books, authored by Tom Monroe, titled "How to Rebuild Your Ford V-8 351C-351M-400-429-460".

Although it focuses on Ford's last generation of push rod V8 motors, it is a very good engine rebuilding primer, full of pictures and step by step instructions. Tom Monroe is an excellent writer, he did a good job of taking technical material and explaining it in everyday terms.

The book is out of print, but I found a copy for sale on ebay, auction closes August 24.
