I have a 72, and the brake ights are staying on all the time. I have pulled the brake switch, sprayed some carb cleaner in it, and it works fine, when I test it off the car. Once I re-installed the switch, it turns the brake lights on after I deprees the brake pedal, and then they lights stay on. Is this a bad switch? I read somewhere that a volkswagen brake switch is the replacement. Is this true?
Thanks,
Paul

If a known-good brake light switch is staying on after brake use, it means that somehowm there is residual pressure in the circuit that the switch is screwed into.
1)- Have you changed calipers or master cylinders? Some people add a residual pressure valve to the brakes to do just this: hold 2-5 psi in the brake circuits for quicker reactions. Normally, it takes more pressure than that to actuate the brake light switch, though.
2)- If the brakes are stock, the switch is in the rear brakes line. Start checking that part of your brakes for what is holding pressure. Stuck caliper?
3)- the VW brake light switch is a completely different thread than the DeTomaso switch. It can be made to work but you'll have to rethread the fitting.
I picked up a switch for a 75 Volkswagen Beetle. It does indeed have different threads. I was lucky and had a nipple and connecter laying around, and was able to install the new switch. I checked it out, and all works fine. I guess there was a problem with the old switch, afterall.
Thanks for your help.
