Can it be done? When they rebuilt my engine they did it with the engine installed. The mechanic said if he had it to do over again he wouldn't think twice about yanking the engine. If you are ONLY changing the cam perhaps you can get away without pulling the engine, but the access you'll have will be limited. You'll work easier with the engine out, obviously.
Clambering over the seats and interior to work and with oily parts is not recommended if you have anything like a halfway decent interior.

The timing cover is a little tricky to get sealed against the oil pan, without at least lowering the front end of the oil pan.

Personally I'd pull the engine and take the oportunity to do all the other little stuff you know is going to crop up anyway!
