I replaced the original 735 CFM Holley as one of the many up-grades to my Pantera. I selected a Speed Demon 650 CFM with vacuum secondaries similar to the Holly. I found the secondaries are not opening or not opening fully. I changed the return spring in the diaphragm that opens the secondaries to the minimum tension. I still only get a partial opening. I installed a vacuum gauge and I read about 3 of vacuum at full throttle through 1st and 2nd gear, which tells me the engine is flowing near maximum CFM. This would indicates to me that there isnt any more displacement to cause a vacuum. I think this is a self-regulating effect of the drop in vacuum and movement of the secondaries. Does this level of vacuum seem correct for this size carb. and engine displacement?
(idling vacuum about 20 and steady, 25K miles on engine, all engine parts original except intake manifold)

I suspect that carb is so similar to the Holley that it needs the same "holley bracket", to allow the secondaries to open fully.

It is on page two or three.

It can also be seen in my Carburetor story
that just appeared in the new issue of
Pantera International.

You are a member of PI, yes ?

The bracket is available from numerous vendors, including PIM, I suspect or you can
shop around for best price.

Chuck, yes I saw your article and I also removed/installed the carb 100 times, but for a different problem. Dan Jones enlighten me about the original carb and I found it wasn't worth the continued effort. I rebuilt many carbs and this one is the only problem I ever had. I e-mailed Barry Grant Inc. and they were very helpful. Vacuum operated secondaries will open in proportion to the maximum flow of the engine. My sensor/indicator was set to only indicate when the secondary butterflies are fully open. Recent testing revealed that they open about 70-80% which is fine because that's when the vacuum level is about 3". This tells me that the stock 351C is at maximum air flow.
Chuck you might want to check out the Demon Carbs if your still having problems, the difference is night and day. High quality, easy to adjust, install ONCE!
