My 72 is in need of a new clutch. The car has 37k and Im hoping the current clutch setup is stock. I have seen many mentions of a centerforce clutch # DF021048-s. Even got as far as ordering one from Jegs. But they couldn't tell me which release bearing was required. I then spoke to Pantera Parts, who offer a centeforce clutch, presumably the same item, but then said I would have to change the flywheel too. My questions is, what release bearing should be used with a centerforce and does this require a flywheel change aswell.

Centerforce is a diaphragm-type clutch with bob-weights for more holding power. You need an 11" size to bolt on a stock 351C flywheel. Anyone that tells you that a new flywheel is required, is trying to sell a 10-1/2" Mustang clutch, which will work OK, but its extra expense for the new f'wheel. You can also have a shop drill & tap a 10-1/2" pattern in your present flywheel. The stock 3-finger clutch takes a flat-face throwout bearing. Mac Tilton of Tilton Eng says that diaphragm clutches need a radiused-face throwout, or you'll get non-linear clutch action. Most Pantera guys that use diaphragm clutches & flat-face throwouts don't notice any problem. Don't get carried away with clutch weight, either. A std-duty 11" diaphragm clutch works just fine in 454 Corvettes, and is noticably easier to push in a Pantera than a 3-finger clutch, without slippage.
The easiest thing to do is PHONE Centerforce yourself and talk to their tech reps.

They make a specific clutch for Panteras (as opposed to modified 5.0 Mustang clutches which some people sell) and I believe you have the correct part number for it. However, the Pantera-specific Centerforce clutch also requires a new flywheel (or having yours re-drilled); they offer a complete kit (clutch, pressure plate, flywheel) which you can special-order from any dealer.

But as long as you can be sure that you're getting the Real Deal and not a modified 5.0 unit, I suggest ordering from a Pantera vendor. The price will be similar, so why not support those who support us?
