Cross referencing

I have a Technical Information manual for Pantera which is dated June 1974. I need some guidelines on using the part numbering system. In the illustrations and parts lists I'm not seeing a logical pattern. The numbers vary from 4 digits to long numbers that include letters in them. On the other hand, when I access a Pantera web site that's selling parts, all parts are 5-digit numbers followed by a single letter. Does there exist a cross reference that matches old numbering with new numbering? We have some parts to sell and the new numbering is great for getting an idea on pricing if I can just match up the numbers.
