I have a very early 1971 Pantera, number 1077. The VIN on the dash is just DT 01077 while the VIN on the wheel box is a lot longer. I has anyone else run into this issue and if so, which number do you have as the VIN on your title. My car has Georgia papers with it with the DT 01077 as the VIN on the paper work. I have a customer interested in purchasing the car and he is concerned that the shorter VIN on the dash is not the correct VIN number that should be on the title. I say since all American car since 1968 used the dash number as the VIN that this is the correct VIN for the car. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks
Ron

It's very common for the early, early pushbutton cars to have the short VIN on the dash like yours. Your car was originally destined for the European marked (like all panteras up to #1286 I think), and probably exported to the US sometime later in it's life.
The correct VIN that I believe would be most appropriate to have in the papers is the long version, something like THPNLC01077?

The long chassis numbering and stamping system that complied with the US regulations, wasn't decided on until february 1971, so it's possible that cars finished before then (like yours may have been), was given the short code on the dash.

Look up early panteras at Provamo.com and you'll find many examples of this
You can call or email Mr. Raffaele Ludovico at RS corse in Modena, he has the original books with registry numbers from the factory. That's how I confirmed the numbers when I bought my pushbutton, including original color.

The web site is www.recorse.com, the email is
chiara.rscorse@gmail.com

He's a very nice and available gentleman, very knowledgeable and ex mechanic for DeTomaso when it was still open. There may be a fee for the research of the numbers, but I may be wrong.

Cheers.

it looks to me like this is the car that sold on ebay on 10/22/13 . I see from the pictures that the vin is stamped on the VEHICLE WARRANTY plate under the front hood . i can see the thpn and the 1077 but i can't make out the other letters that is the full vin and should be on the registration. I read that you car was made in 2/71 so the vin should be THPNLK01077
