YELLOW PANTERA ON EBAY, AUCTION CLOSING THIS MORNING.

I HAVE SPOKEN WITH THE REAL OWNER, VIP CLASSICS IN SAN DIEGO, AND THE EBAY AUCTION IS A SCAM.

Thanks to a great idea by Michael Shortt on the POCA forum, he and I have bid it up to $95,100.

The obvious result being the auction winner will be one of us and as it is a scam, nobody can be forced to make payment.

Scammer foiled, innocent (but naively trusting) bidders will be protected.

UPDATE....

Seller caught on and canceled all our bids, leaving some poor sucker's bid in place.

I've put two snipe bids in place on my snipe service.

Seller may have blocked any future bids from the eBay ID I was using to bid, thus my two snipes (using the two eBay IDs I have in place.)

One way or another, seller will NOT get a winning bid from a willing sucker.

Hopefully eBay Fraud will get into this (acting on my report) before seller can send out a Second-chance-Offer (to bypass my winning bid) at auction' close.

Well that guy, whomever it may be, is protected by Ebays rules that say that he has to be notified that the other bids were canceled and that he is the high bidder BUT is not obligated to accept being the winning bidder.

So the guy has a second chance to not get screwed...but carry on capped crusader...oh wait, that one is taken too. Dam. This is so hard to find a name for you guys? roll on floor

FINAL UPDATE

The auction is no longer in the eBay system. This is not normal for an auction that ended just hours earlier. However, it is normal for an auction that was canceled by eBay. While their policy does not provide for any feedback to me on the fraud report I sent to them, I hopefully feel eBay did get this auction voided. Hopefully prior to the buyer sending any payment.

LESSONS LEARNED

An off-list email to me asked:

.....Did it ever occur to you that this person might be a subscriber? [ to the list) That might be how he knows which bids are meant to sabotage his efforts......

I doubt it.

With bidding up around $500k, it really didn't take a genius to know something was up.

If he hadn't managed to close the auction early, my snipe bid (at three seconds before closing) with an unused-on-his-auction eBay account (I have several) would have trumped everything, even with him having canceled all our earlier high bidding.

We did play our hand too soon, but at least we played.

For any future scam like this, we should get the word out, but withhold the high-bid technique and instead rely on snipe bids to thwart the scammer's success.

I did spend considerable live-person telephone time with eBay and they do have full information on the true owner/seller of this car. I stressed the urgency of having their Fraud department act on this auction, as it was already closed. Hopefully they will take action fast enough so that notification to the winning bidder is made prior to him actually paying for the scam-car. I highly suspect the seller will attempt to arrange a prompt payment outside of proper eBay methods, which would make an after-the-fact refund by eBay a doubtful scenario.

OK. All this means is that the name search goes on. I mean, common. What 41 year old knows who the Lone Ranger was? Next you'll tell me that you know who Hopalong Casady was?
Are you all going to start singing too? Geesh.

Wait. I have an idea. Larry. Do you have anything to do with loaning out money...not borrowing it, lending it? We could call you the Loan Ranger! Big Grin

I watched reruns of the Lone Ranger as a kid in the late 60's - early 70's. I remember him well. I must say that I prefered Batman over him, though!

I've heard of Hopalong Cassidy, but have never seen any of his shows.
