This link has some good information on backspacing http://pantera.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/7650045562...550053893#5550053893

Front wheels will probably work but may rub a little on the inner fender near the foot well. Based on others information 5.5" backspacing would be prefered on the 9" front wheel. I personally would recommend a 8" front wheel with a 235,225 tire

Not sure what the actual backspacing is on the rear but if its over 6" there is a good chance it will hit on the lower hub bolt going though the lower a arm.

To much back space can be fixed with spacers and longer studs and I think these wheels would look great on a Pantera

Ryan,

What's important in fitting the wheels to the car is not the offset or backspace, but getting the outer edge of the tire to ride the proper distance inside the wheelwell, too far outward & the tire will rub the fender lip as it goes up & down with the suspension, too far inward and it looks wrong, plus the inner edge of the tire will rub the inner fender (when you turn the tire up front, or when the suspension travels up & down in the rear). this means the "front spacing" is the important dimension. The front space dimensions on my narrow body car are 3.75" front, 5.00" rear. I assume these dimensions will be fairly standard for all narrow body Panteras.

I've done the math on the Mustang wheels, here's the results:

THe 5.95 back space quoted for the front wheels is wrong, but that's a good thing. 24 mm offset on a 9" width wheel results in a backspace of 5.0", frontspace of 4.0". The front wheels move the outer edge of the front tire 1/4" further outward than they are on mine, which means they will probably rub the fender lip.

27mm offset on the rear 10.5" wheels results in a backspace of 5.75", frontspace of 4.75". The rear wheels move the outer edge of the rear tire 1/4" further inward than they are on mine, which means clearance with the fender lip will be good, however, depending upon the width of tire you choose, you may find some rubbing on the inner fender over big bumps.

If anything is going to cause you grief, it will be the fitment of the front wheels.

Ryan,

I have 17" Cobra R's on my car (235's up front and 285's out back). The reason I didn't go with the 18" FR500's is for the exact reason George mentioned- the fronts didn't work!!

The rear was OK with my stock suspension, but because you need a bigger side wall to make the rears look right it does rub on anything but smooth roads. Unfortunately for me smooth roads do not exist in Michigan!

So that's why the FR500's were a no go for me

Thank you George for the post including measurements. Sheesh, I shoulda just asked ya over a year ago when I went through the whole ordeal.
Take A look at AFS Wheels. There REPO Mustang R Wheels come in 17X8, 17X9, and 17X10.5. The back spacing is 17x8-4.95 or 5.24 17x9-5.95 and 17x10.5-6.63. I think the prices are pretty fair? I've been thinking about getting these myself but its hard to part with the $$$ when I have perfectly good tires with only 6k miles on them! (DOH) If and when I do, I probably will go with the 17x8-5.24 and 17x10.5-6.63
Good Luck
let us know what you go with
I have a set of the AFR's on my 73 narrow body. 17X9 17X10.5. They fit perfect but I did go with aftermarket brakes. The rear needed a 3/32 spacer to move the inner rim out to clear the lower upright shaft, but otherwise were a direct replacement.

The rims are made in Korea. Rather heavy but for daily drivers works OK. I would question their strength on a hardcore racer car.

Wider is better, yeah!

335s in the back, 245/40 in the front. The front fits fine little rubbing when lock to lock on the inside corner against the drain tube for the windshield, some smashing helps that problem. Slight roll of the fender lip was all that was needed to assure a safety factor. I have adjustable shocks so I was able to play around with the rake.

I was pleased on how easy they fit. I have seen 5 other cars running other variations of the mustang rims from other makers. I went with the powder coated white to match the car paint scheme. The powder coating quality is not the best so perhaps a polish alum would be the ticket.
Sean Korb put Cobra R rims on his Pantera and they look nice. His original post to the DT Mail List follows:
http://www.realbig.com/pipermail/detomaso/2006-August/075593.html

He bought four 17" Cobra R rims for $300 bucks and two repro Cobra R rims at 16"x8" for $100 apiece.

Tires:
Sumitomos in 245/45WR-16 and 275/40ZR-17 from Tire Rack for $69.00 and $88.00 apiece respectively. He reports the rears fit great. He could get spacers to bring them further out to the fender, but they aren't as far in as the stock rims were, so he's not concerned. The fronts rub, but not much more than the stock wheels and tires.
