Why did the factory change from the 1971 version which allowed fresh air to enter the car on demand via a center wiper cowl opening
into a louver in the top of the heater box----to the 1973 & 1974 version.Which performs better and has any one use the combination of the two??

Dunno- maybe because it was cheaper. I have drilled two 2-1/2" holes in the cowl plenum and rigged inlets with shut-off valves on my '72 for ventillation. The '74 and later cars also have an outside-air source built into the heater valve. Unless you have a late parts car available or just hit the lottery, don't even consider swapping stock parts around...
