I don't have a pic looking down into the top of the tank where the banjo bolt screws in, but this pic shows what is inside the tank.

If you are sure it is just some sort of gunk that will desolve in gas then just blow it through with compressed air.

If it is something more substantial like a piece of rubber fuel hose, it will not desolve and will just block the line.

You can also take off the brass banjo fitting on top and use a piece of rigid or semi-rigid wire to "rotor-router" the line.

You can see how the tube goes almost to the bottom of the tank in the picture John posted.

weed whacker cable works good , you can even rotate it while pushing it thru.

Thanks for the advice guys, but I guess I don't understand the fitting. If I remove the bolt at the top of the fitting I won't loose the dip tube? The picture shows the tube welded in place, is this always the case? If so, I don't have a problem.

Yes, they are all welded in place. You can remove the banjo bolt without losing the dip tube.
