I use Valvoline in the Pantera, Jag and Harleys. It is spring and time to change the oil in them and the old "3000 miles or 3 months" adage comes up again. None of these has had 3000 miles since the last oil change, but all are well over 3 months.
My understanding of the 3 month rule is that the lighter solvents in the oil will evaporate off and reduce the oil's protective properties.
Is this a critical concern, or is this just a way to market more oil? I know with synthetics the 3000 mile rule is more like 5000 miles, but I have stone-age taste in vehicles and the ones I care about do not run synthetics because of the ZZDP requirement.
Do I really need to spend all day Saturday changing a bunch of oil...or can I just go out and drive them all instead?!!

Thanks, Mooso.

Mooso,
On my daily drivers, I change every 4 months or 5k miles. The Pantera runs Mobil1 and I change it once a year.

I also change the ZF annually (Castrol Hypo C) and the clutch fluid (Castrol GT LMF).

If you are not changing the clutch fluid, you will have problems with the master and slave cylinder seals. I found out the hard way. It is good preventative maintenance.

As I understand it, oil change recommendations vary by vehicle. Over time, the oil becomes acidic as a by-product of the combustion process which create a mild acid that actually etches away internal engine surfaces at the micro structure level, which over time increases componant tolerances. On my Acura, I change the oil once a year, and even then it is light brown. But my Pantera with it's "old school" tolerances (blow by) the oil that was fresh in June is black by September, so it gets changed far more often.
