Hi Steve,
Thanks for your interest. Yes, this carb probably is “a bit much” for most Pantera engines, but I’ll try and give you some more useful info and recommendations based on my experience -
First, my previous application is not really a good reference. Little effort was put into tuning the "Street Avenger" for my (358) engine. I only used it temporarily to make the trip to the Pantera Rally in Vegas from Los Angeles (around 500 miles RT) while having Jet Performance blueprint a “Stage 3” carb specifically for my engine.
A better reference is probably Holley’s own guideline that specifies the 870 Street Avenger for engines rated at “500+ HP”. Holley’s marketing material also claims “6% more acceleration, gobs of top-end horsepower, and 5% better fuel economy right from the box”. I can’t personally attest to any of that, but it sure sounds great!
I can, however, highly recommend a custom carb from Jet Performance (see
http://www.jetchip.com/products.asp?pid=23036). They will build this for your engine size, rpm range and application. These are not cheap, but you may still find this worth the investment for the added performance. My engine was independently dyno tested and Jet’s settings were found to be spot-on!
Regarding price for the Holley - I purchased this from a reputable Pantera shop who has graciously agreed to buy it back. I’m only listing it here to potentially save them the effort. Therefore I wouldn’t sell it for too much less than what I originally paid (which was around $400.00). Again, aside from the 600 miles or so, this is a new carb still in the original box with spare parts for tuning. Feel free to e-mail me with a reasonable offer if you’re still interested.
Regards,
Dave
