Info on 4 Cam SVT in a Pantera?

Have you purchased a car with this swap or thinking about it?If your thinking about it id advise against it.The only thing you gain is is better milage and cold start driveability.It weighs more than a cleveland,requires some work(understatement!)to fit.has alot less torque and horsepower than a mild 351.For what its worth i regularly beat my buddys cobra and its had several mods.He wants to change his cams next but thats about $1500 if he does it himself.Bottom line the 351 is cheaper and better.Just my 2 cents.

The mod motor is a great engine for a Pantera for many reasons. It doesn't take that much work to put one in a Pantera and the 4.6 makes plenty of power when supercharged. By the way the 4.6 is not heavier than a Cleveland. My 5.4 which has a cast iron block weighs 600 lbs.

i am considering a steve wilkinson car. including the car's price the resoration soared above $150m. it's powered by a svt 4.6. > the car has about 100 miles on it.
any 4.6 wilkinson fans? or not?

I like the 4.6 cars. I like the 5.4 a lot better though.

Stock cleveland panteras put down about 250-260 rwhp.

Non-supercharged 4.6 mustang cobras put down about 285 rwhp.

OOPS,i made a mistake on the motor weights.I looked at the 302 and not the cleveland.My bad

A few things you should take into account.
The Pantera:

1. weighs about 300 -700 lbs lighter than Cobras

2. has more aggressive gearing than the Cobra

3. has far better weight distribution and suspension than the Cobra


The Cobra is basically a 70s Ford Fairmount with an expensive engine. It may seem as though I am dogging Cobras but I am not. I used to own one and they are nice but no comparison to a Pantera.

Not saying this is 100% correct, it's just info I found on the web while researching engines.

Chevy small block V8, 575lbs, (generic for '60s-'70s motors)
Chevy small block V8, 535lbs, ('59 Corvette 283 w/alum. intake)
Chevy V8 348/409, 620lbs
Chevy big block V8, 685lbs, Mark IV

Ford 289/302 V8, 460lbs, (late 5.0s are a bit lighter

Ford BOSS 302 500lbs, (shows how much heavier the Cleveland heads are, apx 40lbs)

Ford 351 Cleveland, 550lbs, (includes BOSS and Australian 302-C)

Ford 351 Windsor, 510lbs, (taller engine deckheight results in 50 lbs, up from the 289/302)

Ford 429/460, 620lbs

Ford SOHC 4.6, Irn block, 440?lbs, (Found article saying its 20 lbs lighter than the crown vic version of the 302)

Ford DOHC 4.6, Al block, 440lbs?lbs, (Supposed to be around the same as the SOHC w/Iron block)

Ford DOHC 4.6, Irn block???, (bare Iron block is 154lbs, bare Al block is 84lbs, 70lb difference)

Ford DOHC 5.4, Irn block???, (taller deck height, so inevitably heavier Iron block than the 4.6 iron block) apparently from above post it is apx 600lbs.

The stock '96 and '97 cobras I've seen on dynos and read about weren't as high as 285 hp (the ones with headers, pullies, etc. did 285 or better but not much). The 4.6 supercharged is a powerful motor, but so is a supercharged 351 cleaveland and windsor. From what I've seen and read it's very expensive. They are nice smooth motors and are a modern way to go.

I would evaluate this option, looks good on paper and I would go this route if 5.0L materializes. I believe this is the same base engine that is in the new GT-40.

I wouldn't consider using the 96-97 cobra engines as they were only rated at 305 hp. I would go with 99-01 cobra or 03-up Mach 1 320 hp engine.
